על מנת לאבחן ליקוי סגר חשוב לדעת ולהכיר מהו המצב התקין והרצוי. 

מנשך תקין הוא מנשך שבו השיניים בלסת העליונה ובלסת התחתונה נפגשות האחת מול השנייה כאשר מיקום השיניים יוצר תנועה חלקה וללא הפרעות של תנועות הלעיסה הבליעה והדיבור. 

לרוב, כאשר הנשך תקין, אין הפרעה אסתטית ובעיקר אין הפרעה תפקודית, לא בזמן סגירת הפה ולא בזמן תנועות לעיסה ובליעה. 

ישנם ברי מזל שנולדים עם מנשך תקין. השאיפה בסיום כל טיפול אורתודונטי היא להגיע למנשך תקין, אולם לעיתים האורתודונט נאלץ להתפשר בגלל סיבות שונות כגון: גדילה לא תקינה של הלסתות, מגבלות טכניות בהשגת העמדה הרצויה של השיניים, רצונו של המטופל (שלעיתים מעוניין בטיפול ממוקד ומוגבל ללא שינוי של המנשך) והופעת תופעות לואי של הטיפול האורתודונטי כגון ספיגות שורשים.
