נחירות מופיעות בזמן השינה במספר רמות, וגורמות רעש גדול ובושה לסובלים מהתופעה.

זו אחת מן הצרות הנפוצות שפוקדות את דורנו.

נחירה יכולה להיגרם בגלל כל מיני דברים.

אחד מהגורמים לבעיית הנחירות הוא מבנה הפה ומבנה דרכי הנשימה – למשל חיך רפוי, חסימה כלשהי באף, לשון נפוחה או צוואר קצר ושמן.

חלקי הגוף באזור הפה יכולים להתחכך ליצור את רעש הנחירות. עוד גורמים הם עישון רגיל ועישון פסיבי, שגורמים להופעת דלקת שמשפיעה על דרכי האוויר, או לשינויים פיזיולוגיים בזמן השינה, בגלל חוסר בניקוטין.

העישון יכול גם לפגוע בשרירי דרכי האוויר ולגרום לנחירות להופיע. עוד גורם לנחירות הוא השמנת יתר, שגורמת להופעת נחירות, בגלל כיווץ דרכי האף. 

ישנן דרכים פשוטות וקלות להקטנת או העלמה של תופעת הנחירות והן כוללות מכשיר פלסטי שמרכיבים בפה בזמן השינה אשר משנה את עמדת הלסת התחתונה ומאפשר לאוויר לזרום בצורה יותר טובה.
